I have been watching Heartcatch Precure with Cure Utsukushiku. Episode 42 was quite interesting.
In that show, a little boy had a crush on Yuri-san (Cure Moonlight). Aside from poor Yuri-san being endearingly confused by the love and admiration of the younger children, the way that crush was dealt with was so different than what you would see in a Western show. In the show, Yuri-san and the little boy played together when they were both younger, and Yuri-san saw him as a little brother. The boy was upset by that, had a heart flower that wilted, got turned into a Desertarian, and was purified. The matter was resolved and the boy eventually gave Yuri-san the love letter he wrote. He fully understood that he could not press the matter further, and he did not try to. He mainly wrote the love letter because he wanted to preserve Yuri-san's smile, because he had not seen it in a long time. Yuri-san appreciated the love letter and held it to her heart.
That episode, like many in Heartcatch Precure, made me cry a lot. I have seen many Western shows, with that same crush theme, portraying a child having a crush on an adult or someone older, in which a real romantic relationship would be rather improper. In the Western shows, the child often tries to press the romantic relationship causing problems and in general becoming a nuisance. The older person must find a way to stop the crush, generally trying to do so in a way that is as kind as possible to the child, but even so, the crush is seen as something that must be stopped.
How different it was in this episode, where the crush was allowed and treated as sweet. No bounds of propriety were crossed, and the crush was seen as something healthy and wonderful for both Yuri-san and the little boy. The treatment of this was so much more innocent than would ever be portrayed in a Western show, I think.
