I have taken the liberty of starting a thread here connected to my Japanese diary on the main site.
Partly this is so I can pop little things that aren't really significant enough for an article, and partly to make for easier discussion should we want to chat about it (blog comments are not really conducive to chat are they - I think they seem more like Letters to the Editor than the Village Pump, don't you?)
Anyoldhowness, I have been researching where I am going. I shall be in two places (though probably not at the same time) in Aichi prefecture, which is in the Chuubu region. I wondered if this was a place of historic importance like, say Kyoto or Osaka, since I hadn't really heard of it. Well, it turns out that it very bigly is. Not only is Mt. Fuji in the Chuubu region, but both Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu were born and based in what is now Aichi.
My knowledge of Japanese history is on the poor side of pitiful, but even I had heard of Oda Nobunaga and of course Tokugawa Ieyasu was the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate which ruled Japan from 1600 until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. So essentially these two, plus Toyotomi Hideyoshi (who came between them) were the founders of the modern unified Japanese nation. And guess what? Toyotomi was also born and based in Aichi.
Another thing Aichi is famous for is karakuri ningyou - mechanical dolls (a fascinating thing to a dolly, of course).
Some of them are truly amazing. Take a look at this:

Unsurprisingly Aichi also leads Telluria in robotics.
A fascinating thing to a Novaryan, of course!
