I have now watched about five episodes of Futari wa Pretty Cure, and I am really liking it. I still think that the newer ones are better; however, as I am getting more into this series, it is already rather deep metaphysically. The fairies come from the Field of Light. The nasty people from the Field of Dusk or Field of Dark, stole 5 of the 7 prism stones. The two fairies Mepo and Mipple have the remaining two Prism stones. It seems like the theme is color, and the world that is the battlefield...the one where the Pretty Cures live, is the Field of Rainbows. The two Pretty Cure are Cure White, the color that reflects all colors, and Cure Black, the color that absorbs all colors. I am so happy that I learned that I can watch it with a clear conscience, as I was worried about the name of the monster. It turns out it was not a worry AT ALL! I have Cure Dolly to thank for teaching me, and all of us, that. Here is the article where we talk about it: The Curse Monster
So, I guess my plan now is to watch all the series in order, starting with Futari wa Pretty Cure! Yay! Lots and lots of Precure! |

How exciting. I wish I had looked into the Futari monster earlier. To be honest I was a bit scared of finding something vulgar in Precure myself, but it turns out to have been nothing but West Telluria provincialism and coarseness misreading it. Actually it is an interesting theme that like Akanbe the Futari monster is named for its rudeness or breach of harmony. Harmony/discord is one of the fundamental themes of Precure, isn't it?
I am so glad you are finding Futari to be good - it gives us such a lot to watch. Of course at my Japanese watching speed it will take me forever and currently I am not even keeping up with Doki Doki. But it is good to have found something so sound and profound in such quantity, isn't it?

I am so glad you finally got the courage to look! Harmony/discord really does seem to be one of the fundamental themes of Precure!
I really, really like that the monster turns into little black stars that say Gomenna! Gomenna! Gomenna! That is kind of fun.
Yes! Yes! We really are fortunate to find good shows in such quantity! Yay of Precure!

This is interesting. In this series, it is not until episode 9 that the girls use given names with each other. Until that time, they were Misumi-san and Yukishiro-san. When they started using Nagisa-san and Honoka-san (I could not hear whether the honorifics were used....and they were not on the subs), everyone remarked how close they were to each other. They were not friends at the beginning, unlike in some of the other series.
Anyways, I thought that was interesting, in that we have been saying that the later Precures were culturally closer to Japanese. At least in the matter of use of givien names, it seems like the first series was culturally closer.

How interesting! And on I have just found that Japanese subtitles for Futari wa Pretty Cure were put up just 4 days ago! So now I can watch it if I have the time! But perhaps a mammoth anime period would be a good thing after I come back from Japan anyway... what do you think? It kind of seems like a fairy prompting, suddenly becoming available like that, maybe... In case anyone is interested, the subtitles are here. |

Chibi Cure Satou drew a picture of the Smile! Precures being five lights shining to the future. It is five very eloquent horizontal squiggles in different colors. Not complex, but evocative. She yells at the screen at the Bad Enders and appears to need very little help at all understanding the show. So I wonder if perhaps any subtitles at all are really necessary.

Sou desu ne! The tinies at my last home were fully engaged although the lttle one could hardly have understood it all.
I am sure one could watch without subtitles and get tge general idea, but I don't think that would be very helpful in learning the language (there are two schools of thought on that question but I am not super-convinced by the other one. I'd be interested to know your thoughts).

Oh, that is so wonderful about Chibi Cure Satou! That is really sweet. I am so glad that she is enjoying Smile Precure.
Dolly-chan, I am finding myself picking up on things without even trying while watching Anime, even though I am using English subtitles. I have learned a little Japanese from all of you, but I find I tend to hear things naturally while watching. I get rather excited when I do. Every now and then I pick up on something new as well.
I think, though, that different people learn in different ways. When teaching it is always good to give people information in various ways. Some people learn best by seeing, some by hearing, some by doing, etc. Learning the same thing in different ways is the best overall actually, in terms of retention. This is why I do not put much stock into generalized theories about the "best way to learn." There is really no such thing as a "one size fits all" approach to learning.
I think that if you pay attention to yourself, you will see how you learn best. I know that it is hard for dolls to pay attention to themselves to see what works best. Dolls like to be told the best way to do things by those who know best. I don't think that modern "studies" really provide the information that you are looking for. If you had a true Sensei who was working with you, she would help guide you as far as what was right for you, but not having that, I think it is ok to trust what feels right to you.

I'm in favor of doing both. Reading Japanese subtitles to learn, and also just listening to Japanese to absorb. But then - I'm not much for languages, so we're working from basic brunette definiteness here.

Oh, the last episode of Futari wa Pretty Cure was quite fascinating!
It was fascinating because we discovered that the Evil Side was seeking the Power of Creation. The Power of Creation could be obtained with the acquisition of the 7 Prism Stones. We also find out that the Power of Creation is all around in the Field of Rainbows, which is the battlefield world, or the world of the Pretty Cures.
I know we have learned that Evil can only destroy, it can not create...but it is interesting that this is part of the premise of this series!
As the series is going along, I am realizing that even the first Pretty Cure series was quite dense, with sound metaphysical teaching.
How exciting!

Oh oh oh! I think the theory that Precure transformations happen "out of time" is RIGHT! I just saw an episode of Futari wa Precure where we saw the transformation from the viewpoint of an audience, and it happened instantaneously!
Heee...I knew it was right when people said it, but it was fun to SEE that this was right!
